PhotobucketWhy Be Frugal?

I consider frugality an art form and a religious conviction. I learned about paying cash for purchases, recycling and reusing just about everything and being generous to friends and those in need from my parents.

My faith instructs me all things are gifted by God and so I am compelled to be a good steward of my gifts. [The highest heavens belong to the LORD, but the earth he has given to man. Psalm 115:16]

I'm giving away a set of 3 canvas tote bags!

SCROLL DOWN FOR DETAILS ON HOW TO WIN THIS TOTE BAG SET
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I recently participated in Good Housekeeping's Good Deals and Smart Steals sweepstakes and won these 3 canvas tote bags. **
My bags arrived on Monday (less than week after I sent in my receipt:-). They are a great size, and the two larger ones are expandable. The smaller one (still a nice size) is so cute with a pocket on the outside (I'm thinking coupons. cell phone. car keys)
Even if you're not a cloth bag grocery shopper these will come in handy - and you can toss them in the laundry when you need to!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As much as I like these bags, I've decided to "share my wealth" with one lucky reader! Yep, I'm giving away this set of canvas bags!

HERE ARE THE RULES TO BE ENTERED TO WIN:

1) Become a follower of Just Be Frugal

2) Leave a comment on this post telling me about your favorite good deal or smart steal from your own life.

3) If you're already a follower you can earn up three total entries:
-----leave a comment as described in #2
-----leave an additional comment telling me you're already a follower AND/OR
-----tell someone else about Just Be Frugal and ask them to follow (be sure they tell me you sent them!)

I'm going to leave this give-away open until Wednesday, March 31 at midnight (EST). That will still leave plenty of time for everyone to participate by making the qualifying purchases detailed at the Good Housekeeping site HERE whether you win this set or not!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

**Good Deals & Smart Steals: Shop from 3/9/10-5/2/10 and spend $25 or more in a single transaction on these participating brands to receive a 3-piece shopping tote set courtesy of Good Housekeeping. Check out the April issue of Good Housekeeping for details on how to redeem or go HERE to the Good Housekeeping Website.

Some Ohio & WV Kroger stores are offering TRIPLE coupons

Kroger is running their Triple Coupon Promotion in select Ohio & West Virginia stores starting tomorrow (3/25) through Sunday, 3/28/10!

Sadly, I live in Virginia and can't take advantage of this!! But I'm thrilled to share with my readers!

Here is how the Kroger Triple Coupon Promo Works:

Coupons up to and including $0.50 will triple to $1.50. If your store doubles up to $0.99, coupons from $0.51-0.99 will continue to double. If your store does not double over $0.50 that will still be the case.

This promo runs Thursday (3/25) through Sunday (3/28). There is no limit on the number of coupons you can use, and internet printables WILL also triple provided they have unique serial numbers (which is almost always the case unless someone is making illegal copies).

Now would be a great time to print off coupons.com coupons! Click on the rectangle below and you can print off coupons for dozens of items.

Here is partial list of stores that are participating. I can’t list every single city, but if your store is near one of those listed below it would be worth a trip to see if they are running triple coupons as well:

Ohio

* ALL Central Ohio Stores
* Mt. Vernon
* Marion
* Delaware
* Mansfield
* Chillicothe
* Circleville
* Sandusky
* Toledo
* Washington Court House
* Portsmouth
* Jackson
* Lancaster
* Bellefontaine
* Saint Clairsville
* Martins Ferry
* Bellaire

West Virginia

* Weirton
* Wheeling
* Moundsville

As always, please call ahead to your local store to confirm if they are participating. (If you store was one of the ones participating recently, they should be participating again). And if you live near the store, you may even have better luck stopping in to see for yourself.

Thanks so much to Marcy at Stretching a Buck for this exciting news!

Time to "spring clean" my pantry

I haven't really been acquainted with my pantry since right before Christmas when my daughter was in town and we had a baking blitz. I'm not proud to admit that but I thought it might be helpful to reveal this truth to others who are having a pantry crisis!

When we bought our house 4 years ago, we converted one of the linen closets (we have a split foyer and only really needed one linen closet) to a pantry. The kitchen has Zero space for pantry items so I needed some place to keep things handy. Hence, the re-purposed linen closet! It's been a great space and I really maximized it with wire racks, turnstiles, graduated shelving and clip on-hanging shelves. But like I said . . . it's been a while . . .

Anyway, I'm swallowing my pride to share what I found and what I plan to do:

1 tortilla chip bag with about 30 chips in the bottom, along with some crumbs--not well sealed and so stale. These will be used when I make chicken enchillada casserole this week (which will also include the 3 cans of cream of mushroom soup that had been hiding way in the back as well:-)
1 bag of French's fried onions with about 2 casserole's worth of fried onions left in it. These will also be used up this week--my family is really going to be excited!
1 bag of Cheez-its with about 1/4 cup of crumbs in the bottom. These are now in a zip lock bag, ready to be used later - either as filler in a meatloaf or as a topping to a casserole or vegetable dish. (These items are stored (with the boxes of actual crackers and chips, etc.) in plastic baskets on the floor.)

Photobucket

2 batches of my oatmeal cookie mix now combined into one huge batch- I made one last week and didn't even know I had one already in the back of the pantry!

Photobucket

Lots of pieces and bit of baking supplies left over from our baking frenzy over Christmas. Combined, sorted - and yes threw out some of these. I had two bags of coconut open, 2 packs of baking chocolate (for my "world famous" dipped fruit) unused, 2 bags of marshmallows previously opened. I'll use the marshmallows up with the box of Rice Krispies just calling out to be made into Rice Krispie treats, various cans of evaporated and sweetened condensed milk.

Photobucket

Then I organized all the pasta and rice bags and boxes, pulled out all cans and organized and replaced in a logical order--not necessarily all together but by how they will be used--for example, the can of refried beans is next to the pack of taco shells. The canned tomatoes, tomato sauce and paste are next to the canned kidney beans and cans of ro-tel for one last end-of-the season batch of my husband's yummy chili, etc.

For small packs of seasoning mixes, like stir-fry and tacos, I have attached a gallon-size freezer bag with velcro to the inside of the pantry door. Easy to see, out of the way, and they don't get lost in the back of the pantry (in theory, of course:-)

I feel proud of my pantry again and will be able to be much more frugal because I won't be purchasing items I already have on hand.

Oh . . . I pulled out a couple of extra boxes of pasta and 2 jars of pasta sauce to take to our church next Sunday for delivery to an area food pantry.

What's in your pantry?

Quick Tip: Save a rusty cast-iron skillet!

Don't throw out that rusty cast-iron skillet! Here is advice from several sources on how to save your cast iron skillet once it's developed a bit of rust -- or if you find an old one at a yard sale.

Photobucket

--Use a stiff nylon brush, hot water and a little salt (a natural abrasive) to scour off the rust. You may have to throw away the salt and add more and repeat the scouring process if the pan is really dirty.

If that doesn't work, use hot water and steel wool. When you're done, coat the inside and outside of the pan with vegetable oil and place it on foil-upside down-in the oven at 350 degrees for an hour to re-season. Allow to cool before using or storing.

--To clean rust from an abused garage sale find of a cast iron skillet soak the item for 24 hours in a bath of 1 part molasses and 3 parts water. Clean with a bit of steel wool. (resoak as needed) Season and voila.

--To prevent future rust: After washing the pan, put it on the stove and let it heat until any water left in the pan has evaporated.

--Never use scouring powder or soap! The soap will suck out the good oils in the pan and the pan could absorb the soapy taste!!

Lord Help Me, I've Got Too Much Debt!

Are you struggling with debt? Most of us don't intend to get buried in it. It seems as if it just happens over time. We charge something, fully intending to pay off the balance on pay day. Then something comes up - an emergency expenditure.

When the credit card bill comes, we don't have enough to pay off the balance so we pay only the minimum due. Then next month, we need to repair a car or pay an unexpected medical bill and we don't have the cash so we charge it.

Pay day comes, and now the balance has grown on the card, but we still pay the minimum due. Over time, the balance grows. When we max out the card, we apply for another card - applications arrive almost daily in the mail, don't they!?

At some point, we realize we need to get out of debt. But we don't know how. We don't even know where to begin. I'm not an expert. But I came across a common-sense, easy to apply way to begin the journey to being debt free.

Check out the details at my Frugal Friday's post at Life Coaching for Christian Women.

Organize me! Please!

I don't know how many times I've arrived home from work, only to remember I forgot to do something on the way home! Grrr, I can't stand that! Well . . . modern technology to the rescue!

I just read about reQall, reqall.com, a free voice recognition tool that allows you to send yourself reminders! You don't need to install any software to call and use reQall. You can use reQall from any phone (including mobile phones, iPhones and BlackBerry smartphones), web browsers, AIM, Jabber, Google Talk and Yahoo Instant Messenger. Get all the details HERE.

Just call the toll-free number from your cell phone to leave yourself reminders! ReQall organizes the recordings and plays them back to you as lists of to-do items, notes and shopping items. Never forget to pick up a prescription or send an email again!

If you have a BlackBerry or iPhone, the program transcribes your messages and automatically sends you reminders via e-mail or IM.
