PhotobucketWhy Be Frugal?

I consider frugality an art form and a religious conviction. I learned about paying cash for purchases, recycling and reusing just about everything and being generous to friends and those in need from my parents.

My faith instructs me all things are gifted by God and so I am compelled to be a good steward of my gifts. [The highest heavens belong to the LORD, but the earth he has given to man. Psalm 115:16]

Christmas Light Trade-In at Home Depot

Photobucket

Home Depot will take your old Christmas light, working or non-working and will give you a $3 off coupon toward new energy-efficient LED string lights. The Home Depot Christmas Light Trade-In offer is valid through November 15, 2010. and customers are limited to five trade-ins.

Your old lights can even be broken, tangled, or not working. Who doesn’t have those? The price that I saw for a 50- light strand was $5.97 for 50 lights, so the net cost would be $2.97 and the energy cost is 80% less to use these new energy efficient lights.

80% off Restaurant.com Certificates through August 16

80% off Restaurant.com Certificates

Through 8/16, Restaurant.com takes 80% off all their printable dining certificates via code BIG. This lowers the price on $10 certificates, which are normally $4, to $0.80 and $25 certificates, normally $10, to just $2.

Obviously, not all restaurants participate, but there is definitely a good selection to choose from.

Just be careful to read the fine print as many restaurants exclude alcoholic beverages, weekends and other things.Enter code: BIG (80% off)

Buy or sell textbooks for a reasonable cost at Campusbooks.com

At Campusbooks.com you can type in the ISBN number of your book or the name of the book that you are interested in selling and in a few seconds, the site will return a search from all of the top sites that buy back books. You simply print out a shipping label and mail the book, postage is included. It is so easy. Don’t let your used textbooks gather dust, turn them into cash today at Campusbooks.com. This is also a great site to purchase textbooks! Check them out today!

Campusbooks.com also has a side by side price comparison of the cheapest prices for textbooks including renting the book so you can see in an instant who has the cheapest price. Often you can buy your college books used, even cheaper than you can rent them.

The only drawback is that the books take time to arrive. Get your book list as early as possible, so you can have your book by the time classes start.

ThredUp - exchange kids clothes and save!

Lori at More With Less Today posted this a couple of days ago:

ThredUP is a site where parents exchange gently worn kids clothing. The recipient pay the shipping and handling. The USPS will mail you the empty box that you need to use to send your clothing.

You are not usually making a direct swap with someone else. You will simply choose the “box” of clothing that you wish to receive, then pay shipping and handling. Next you pack your own box of clothing to swap, and when someone choose’s your box, you print out a label and mail it. Remember, only the recipient pays shipping and handling.

This is a neat concept. I found other clothing swap sites to explore, but ThredUP is just for kid’s clothing. The basic membership is free. There is a “PRO” Membership which has some extra bells and whistles. You can sign up through this introductory link and try the PRO membership free for two months if you like, or just opt for the free membership from the start.

Here is the invitation to check out ThredUp:

I am officially IN LOVE! with SpringPad!

Who couldn’t use a little more organization?! This site I just learned about from Brandie at Free Sample Freak named SpringPad is awesome!

At the site you can take a recipe that you like from ANY website, blog, etc. and save it in your SpringPad! You can even edit ingredients, add notes, videos, etc. for your recipes.

Once you add the recipes you like, you can tell SpringPad to generate an ingredient list - and you can check off which ingredients (including quantity/amount) to your shopping list!

Being a total skeptic when something sounds just too good to be true, I tried it out using this recipe from Kraft foods that will allow me to use up some of the seemingly massive amount of shredded cheese I've accumulated lately (and sound like something yummy my family will enjoy).

Yep, you can cut and paste the url for any recipe you find on line and it will capture the entire recipe. (You can also type in your own favorites from your own collection.) You can arrange them any way you want to.

You can also keep track of foods/recipes you'd like to try, wines you have on hand or are interested in learning more about, businesses (like local restaurants, service stations, etc.) AND a contact list including phone numbers, addresses, emails, blogs, etc.

Also, if you have a phone with apps, you can get a FREE app from SpringPad and check out your recipes, contact's phone numbers or addresses or the name of that wine you've been wanting to try on your cell while you are shopping!

SpringPad even has a button you can add to your browser bar so you can automatically add information to your SpringPad.

I can't wait to try this out!! All my information in one place! Hmmm, now I'll have to ask for an iPhone for my birthday so I can be completely connected to my info, wherever I am!

Thanks, Heather!

Rules of the Road for Yard Sales

Parking

Park 2-3 houses away from the yard sale location - the exercise is good for you and you have time to repeat over and over - I'm only looking today . . . I' m only looking today.

Money

Leave your money in the car - if you want something enough to walk all the way back to the car, it's probably a keeper. Besides, you might change your mind and just head on to the next yard sale.

On Friday night get plenty of quarters and $1 bills. If you have $10 bills, you're more likely to spend them!

Price

Never, ever pay the asked-for price. Even if it's something you really like and you honestly think it's priced fairly. You are not in Wal-Mart. These folks have no overhead. They don't want to haul it back into the house or the garage--or even worse--the dump.

Make an offer--they'll probably take it. It's okay to haggle a little. If they don't accept your offer - leave and come back in an hour - if it's still there: meant to be and at a lower price. If not, you didn't really need it anyway.

Selection/Discrimination

I'm not talking about racial profiling here! I'm referring to "scoping out" a yard sale before you get out of the car. If the front yard is full of baby clothes and toys and your youngest child is 12, you're probably not going to find anything you can use -- or should be spending your money on.

If you see electronics and you want to get your child a second hand something -- go for it! My husband is a huge music buff so he scouts out old LP's and other music media, records it for his personal use and then re-sells the original LP, CD or whatever.

Pick a neighborhood/area

This weekend our neighborhood of about 500 homes had no fewer that 6 yard sales!! I was thrilled! The neighborhood across the street had 4 and two separate neighborhoods on my way to the farmer's market had 5 and 6 respectively! This saves gas and especially time when you concentrate your efforts in one geographic area.

No kids allowed

I know, they've been saving their allowance- for weeks. But you know they're going to pick out something that will fit very nicely in that huge tub of "stuff" that no one ever goes into -- or frankly talks about. They don't need it and you don't have room for it!

Take small vehicle

Do not take a pick up truck with an empty bed or mini-van (empty because you left the kids home) unless you have no other option. A smaller vehicle will discourage you from buying (a) large items and (b) too many items.

Etiquette

This is not a frugal tip, merely a suggestion on how to treat people. Always greet the yard sale host. Even if they have absolute junk (in your opinion) find something nice to say about their stuff. When you leave, whether you purchase something or not, tell them "thank you." It's just nice:-)

What are your frugal yard sale tips?

Buying in bulk - pro or con?

Seth Fiegerman, MainStreet says, "Sometimes it's smart -- even thrifty -- to resist the lure of the 'deal.' You may end up spending less in the long run if you buy some items in smaller quantities."

His post, 15 things not to buy in bulk is a great cautionary read. While I don't agree with eveyrthing Fiegerman says, he does make some good points. Most perishible items can be frozen to extend their 'shelf life.' But we do each need to consider our own situation before making a purchasing decision.

Track your lost WalMart Receipt

It's important to keep all receipts at least 30 days after purchases. I have a huge catalog size envelope where I just toss them. (I'd like to say I organize them by store, but I cannot tell a lie:-)

Now I have a backup plan for all my WalMart purchases (paid with a credit/debit card) You can call the WalMart Electronics Payment Hotline at 479.277.2643 and they will look up your receipt and then fax it to you.

I read this great tip at High Class Living on a Middle Class Budget

Eat 5 fruits and vegetables a day the frugal way!

Eating healthfully doesn't have to be expensive! I found these great tips and techniques to make it easier to eat 5 fruits and vegetables a day. Not only are they quick and easy -- the don't cost extra!

These are offered by Laura Bofinger, Staff Writer for Sparkpeople.com.
  • Add fruit to your cereal, oatmeal, waffles or pancakes at breakfast.
  • Create your own yogurt flavors with plain yogurt and different combination of fresh fruit.
  • Snack on raw vegetables or fruits instead of chips or pretzels. Keep sugar snap peas, raisins or carrot sticks in your car, your office or your backpack.
  • Use chunky salsa instead of thick, creamy snack dips.
  • Drink 100% juice instead of coffee, tea, or soda.
  • Add frozen veggies to any pasta dish. It's an easy way to get in another serving of the good stuff.
  • Keep fruits and vegetables in line of sight. Grapes, oranges, bananas, and apples make a colorful bowl arrangement on the table. If you see them, you will eat them.
  • Dried fruit is just as portable as potato chips -- and less messy. It tastes especially good when added to basic trail mix.
  • When cooking vegetables, makes 2-3 times more than you need and immediately store the extra away for tomorrow. It'll save you time later on.
  • Add your own beans and vegetables (tomatoes, spinach, peppers, cabbage) to canned and quick-serve soups.
  • If you must have pizza, load on extra veggies and pineapple instead of fatty meats and extra cheese.
  • Try berries, melons or dates for a naturally sweet dessert rather than the usual candy bar, cookie, or ice cream sandwich.
  • Frozen fruit and veggies are nearly as healthy as the fresh stuff, and only take minutes to prepare.
  • Combine fruit with your main meal courses. Raisins, apples and tangerine slices add sweet, crunchy variety to a salad. Apples complement pork, pineapple is great with fish, and orange slices are perfect with chicken.
Besides being packed full of nutrients, fruits and vegetables can also be quite filling. They may even ward off any empty calorie snacking that might follow! Don’t be discouraged by the recommended 5 servings a day. The guide below shows that one serving is less than what you might think.

One serving equals:
1 medium piece of fruit
1/2 cup fruit (raw, canned, or frozen)
1/2 cup cooked vegetables (canned or frozen)
1 cup raw vegetables
1/4 cup dried fruit
4-6 oz. of 100% juice (serving size depends on the type of juice)
1/2 cup cooked peas or beans
